Candle Holder, Set of two pieces

Made of white earth this candleholder is carefully crafted using the hand modeling technique, hand-painted with cobalt-oxide, and coated in glossy transparent glaze. The process of creation starts from the dust and consists of multiple phases, it takes two weeks to make an object, it is a slow object that speaks of the process, please see the section Made by Hand.

All ceramic materials used are non-toxic, food-safe, and dishwasher-safe.

The story 

In the transformation of matter into supermatter (or non-matter), light becomes the ultimate distillation in the making of an object.

In our search for simplicity — of both form and meaning — we followed a reversed path in the studio: how to turn light into a containing object, an imperfect vessel that mirrors and reflects, responding with shadow. For two months, we played with different materials, conflicting dimensions, diluted and concrete forms, until we arrived at the simplicity of an hourglass — a vertical column whose natural continuation is the candle, delicately reigning like an obelisk.

We wanted the vessel to hold water, because I, in my own absorption of life, keep a candle burning at the bedside — so I know it can remain lit even without me, embracing the darkness. The water puts it out once the flame reaches it: one element’s quiet triumph over the other. And yet, the same water becomes a mirror, emanating the reddish reflections it has quietly stolen.

We also loved that by stacking the hourglasses, a semi-column emerges — a beautiful, fragile way to build a poetic vertical.

This object, we hope, is a pragmatic, poetic, and authentic answer to how a candle might be kept — at the bedside of light. Each piece is slightly distinct in shape and size, because they are, as you may guess, handmade with the care and grace of the calling we carry as makers.
